5Rhythms is a dynamic movement practice. A practice of being in your body, that ignites creativity, connection, and community. Sweats are un-facilitated, music-only, 2 teachers x 1 hour 5Rhythms Dance Waves.
For over a decade Meredith Davies and David Juriansz have been a dynamic duo for 5Rhythms in Australia, and their passion and vision has been to put Melbourne on the international 5Rhythms map. Meredith completed her 5Rhythms training with Gabrielle Roth in America in 2001. After teaching classes and workshops in Europe, she returned in 2003 to offer the first weekly 5Rhythms classes in Australia and has built an enormous dance tribe with her welcoming and enticing style. David spent 12 years dancing and producing 5Rhythms events, until the call to teach came in 2011. He weaves humour, storytelling, and his passion for 5Rhythms, while engaging both newcomers and long-term dancers.
The Abbotsford Convent is a charismatic historic venue, with plenty of eating venues and picnic spots among the Convent grounds. Rosina Auditorium is a large, light venue close to grassy lawns and a shady courtyard. Children are welcome to this class if supervised. Parking is available.
To sweat is to pray, to make an offering of your innermost self. Sweat is holy water, prayer beads, pearls of liquid that release your past. Sweat is an ancient and universal form of self healing, whether done in the gym, the sauna, or the sweat lodge. I do it on the dance floor. The more you dance, the more you sweat. The 5Rhythms are Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical & Stillness. Together they are called a Wave.
In FLOWING we listen to our body with an inward focus. We respect our energy and encourage movement with fluidity, continuity, and breath. We follow our feet.
As our energy builds, we have energy we need to express. In STACCATO we move outwards with clarity, definition, purpose. Percussive, directional, goal oriented movement.
In CHAOS we meet complexity and surrender to it. We soften and shake out. We let go of that which we can’t control and rest in the beat and the unpredictable release of our movement.
We begin to lighten up in LYRICAL. We re-discover an inner essence that was obscured by mental distress and distraction. We move with spaciousness, spontaneity and a fuller expression of our true creative self.
In STILLNESS we move with the empty space that we feel both inside and outside of us. We begin to distil and complete our dance with a heightened sense of awareness and presence. Often feeling wonder and deep gratitude.
Together, the 5Rhythms are a map for living a dynamic, fluid and creative life – the Medicine Mandala indicates the depth and different expressions of the work. For all students, it begins with dancing a Wave: a revelation where we fully embody our experience, harness raw energy and give expression to all of this. Dancing Wave after wave is a pathway towards greater personal exploration, expression and freedom.
